While there are some companies that vow to build a pool in 45 days, this is unrealistic if you want it done correctly. What are the steps to design and build a pool properly? Let’s take a look:
Design and engineering. Sitting down with a homeowner and determining exactly what the ultimate goal is in a pool could take anywhere from three days to three months. While that sounds like quite a daunting timeline, it all comes down to how clear of a picture the client comes to the table. For instance, if a homeowner has an approximate vision on the size, shape, depth, and amenities, it’s going to take considerably less time than someone who has no vision or changes their mind repeatedly.
Permits. Four to eight weeks are considered reasonable. But before you cry out the absurdity of this timeline, consider the variables over which we have no control. Every municipality is different and depending on its size and the pool’s location, we are at the mercy of where the customer lives. Some permits take four weeks to pull while other can take up to a year. The range of the pendulum and the reasons it can deviate are out of our scope of control.
Excavation. Ideally, this takes a couple of weeks, but it could be a couple months. This is an invasive process that let’s face it—it’s messy and requires patience in the fact that you, your pets, and your children are unable to use your backyard for a period of time. I don’t want to scare anyone by saying that I will be living with you for a month or two while this is complete, but it’s a reality to ensure the job is done correctly. While it feels like an inconvenience in the short-term, it pays off with a beautiful backyard feature in the end.
Electrical and plumbing. The circulation system, jets, main drain, and skimmer all are installed within three to five days.
Form. This is where the pool really starts to take shape. Once the orange fence goes up to secure the area, this is when we “shoot” the pool full of concrete and form the structure and support it with wood until it cures, typically about three to five days.
Tile and decking. The decorative tile and the skirt, or decking, around the pool take about a week. This could be considered the home stretch as the project is nearly complete.
After the finishes are applied, it’s finally time to fill the pool and enjoy it.
