How can homeowners save money on a backyard pool?

There are two separate lists that must be considered in backyard pool construction—wants and needs. What one may consider a necessity may simply be out of reach for another family. It all depends on what you’re looking for and your budget. But the good news is that there are ways to make a pool look beautiful without breaking the bank.

First, when discussing the design of a pool with a client, I like to find out how they will use the pool. For instance, a single man may have different ideas on how he intends to use his pool as opposed to a family with small children. While the bachelor may intend to entertain, features like a sun shelf or a hot tub might be desired while the family may prefer a deep end with a diving board or a slide.

For example, while custom lighting can create a great ambiance, it may not be necessary for everyone. We use LED lights, which, although requiring an initial investment, are energy-efficient and help save on electricity costs over time. This way, homeowners can enjoy a beautiful, well-lit pool area without a significant increase in energy expenses.

When it comes to materials, not all pools decks have to be coated in marble to be beautiful. While marble might be what the client wants, a pool that incorporates travertine or concrete pavers can be just as beautiful and remain in budget.

Looking outside the pool, the same theories can be applied to make the area aesthetically pleasing. Not every homeowner can afford a $5,000 tree and quite frankly, it’s not necessary. Instead, the same result can be achieved with a $500 option that makes a statement and is more affordable.

It all comes down to making good decisions based on the value of the item and the look you are trying to achieve. Don’t break the bank trying to use the highest-quality materials at every turn. Instead, add a “splash” or a “pop” here and there while keeping the other price tags within a reasonable budget.
